Outcome 3:

Values social, political, legal and ethical influences that impact nursing practice and nursing education.

3a. Evaluate the process of ethical decision making.

I learned how to better make informed decisions and to analyze other's opinions and feedback before implementing change. Working as a community health nurse, I must be culturally and ethically competent, and nonjudgmental of the clients I serve or their homes in which I provide care in.

3b. Apply ethical principles in the role of educator/executive.

I reviewed a qualitative study regarding chronicity of substance abuse in poverty-stricken women and how to use ethical relationships and fair treatment of study participants. I learned what it takes to be a successful nurse executive and the skills I must possess to excel, and at the core of every successful leader is strong ethical principles.

3c. Advocate for public policy that promotes and protects the health of the public.

I reviewed a public policy on the prevention of childhood lead poisoning that I found I could integrate into my current nursing role and it

reinvigorated my passion for public health. Healthcare is governed by multiple regulatory bodies and I discussed my personal thoughts on the success or lack there of in a reflection.

3d. Formulate strategies that respond to policy changes that impact health and education.

Government and regulatory agencies impact health and education and I discuss current and future problems that nurse executives will face throughout their career. I developed a strategy to include employees working in social services/community health, in a wellness promotion program organized by the department I supervise. Although this has not been implemented, this would greatly decline the insurance claims and keep healthcare premiums low.

3e. Analyze the impact of access on the health of populations.

Access to healthcare is still a problem in the U.S. I learned through an interesting debate that there is no easy solution to this problem, but there are many valid points on both sides of the issue. Learning how to calculate profit margins will help when making informed decisions to accept or decline large volumes of patients as a nurse executive.
