Outcome 4:

Appreciates the impact of diversity within nursing and the global community.

4a. Examine personal thinking for clarity, objectivity and bias.

The following reflection allowed me to open my eyes to who I was personally and professionally, who I am now, and it served as a reminder to be true to myself and others. While working on a group evidence-based project, we analyzed the literature in research articles related to our PICO(T) question, and I had to examine my own personal thinking and experiences to avoid bias.

4b. Demonstrate behaviors and attitudes that support respect, reciprocal learning, and advocacy related to human

      differences.

This reflection opened my eyes to multiple cultural behavior and attitudes related to human nature, and I authored a personal and emotional discussion forum conveying my experiences in life and work. I learned about all the paradigm shifts in healthcare and I discuss how nurses must act in all capacities to serve all populations in nontraditional ways to meet every humans' needs.

4c. Coach others to improve sensitivity and acceptance of diverse individuals and groups.

Individual behavior affects the overall perception of an organization. I learned that my own morales and beliefs may not be the same as coworkers, but to share your organization's mission is important to be culturally competent and sensitive to all individuals. My practicum improvement project was based on my passion for helping low-income, vulnerable families with young children to have improved health and succeed in school. I developed a grant proposal to obtain monies to test blood lead levels in young children living in Omaha's superfund lead site.

4d. Develop culturally competent educational/workplace practices.

I developed a business plan for the Salvation Army Early Head Start program to be able to serve more diverse, low-income families in needCompleting my self-assessment of the AONE competencies allowed me to reflect on the skills and achievements I've obtained as well as where I could improve. I feel I excel in developing culturally competent educational and community practices through my written policies, procedures, and grants.
